The State of Academic Writing in the Philippine Context

ACADEMIC WRITING IN PHILIPPINE CONTEXT

Academic writing refers to a particular style of expression that researchers use to define the intellectual boundaries of their disciplines and their areas of expertise. The characteristics of this includes a formal tone, use of the third-person rather than first-person perspective, a clear focus on the research problem under investigation, and precise word choice.

Academic writing for publication is properly nested in schools. That is the proper place. The purpose is to train the mind of the student. Academic writing takes place all around the world, also in the Philippines.  It transforms understandings about English as an international language for academic knowledge purposes. It examines the impact of the growing dominance of English or Filipino on academic writing for publication.

The state of academic writing in the Philippine context depends largely on the educational background of the student and its school itself and its resources. There is a huge difference between the Philippine and the American context based on our academic performance.

We, the Filipinos most likely procrastinate all the time. Filipinos like to do essays, blogs, or paper works in the very "last minute". Sadly, it is already in the mind set of Filipinos to be lazy. And worst case scenario, Filipinos would just often copy and paste in the internet through Wikipedia, Google Scholar, Google, etc. And in the Philippines, the internet resources are very poor.

Try comparing an academic paper to a student who lives in a province and goes to a provincial school to a student who lives in an urban place. You can see a very huge difference because in the city, there is a lot of internet resources, compared to the province.

The writing style of Filipinos need to improve.
We can overcome difficulty in writing academic papers through a combination of thorough feedback, writing practice, and careful revision.
